Description: The Acquisitions and Developmental Editor is responsible for acquiring and editing a full list of nonfiction titles that encompass the core areas of Chelsea Green’s publishing program. She/he works closely with all members of the Chelsea Green team, including the Deputy Publisher, and across all departments.

 

Responsibilities

  • Acquire, develop, and edit 8-10 new titles per year from acquisition to manuscript delivery and developmental editing. Manage all associated tasks involved in bringing those books to market, including title discussion, coordinating with the Production Department on cover design, coordinating with the Marketing Department on jacket copy, and working with authors to solicit endorsements. Project manage additional titles, as needed.
  • Develop and manage preproduction schedules based on commitments given by the authors, illustrators, editors, and others involved in the front end of the book development. Ensure all schedules are met and all related tasks complete for each book.
  • Work with authors and the Managing Editor and Production Director to develop and manage the art program for illustrated titles, including commissioning outside illustrators and managing the inventory of art work.
  • Determine bibliographic information of each title, including trim, page count, category, and price. Oversee accuracy of all information within the company database.
  • Read and evaluate proposals, offer feedback to colleagues on proposals in development, and carry out duties of the Acquisitions Committee.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with three to five years of book acquisition and editorial experience in non-fiction book publishing.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication; organization and collaboration; detail and deadline driven; flexibility and capacity to work unsupervised in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of Chelsea Green’s core editorial areas and expertise in several.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and capacity to learn and use a variety of online data systems.

Requirements: The ability to efficiently tackle, prioritize, and complete assigned work on deadline is essential. The position demands an inquisitive, critical mind, writing and editing skills, excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, leadership, and the ability to contribute to multiple book projects in various stages of development. The position demands a broad awareness of CGP areas of interest, alertness to emerging trends and big ideas, capacity to cultivate relationships with authors and prospective authors, agents, and an understanding of the editorial and production process, the ability to manage (including freelancers, Editorial Intern, and Editorial Assistant), knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style, and marketing acumen to assist Marketing staff in positioning new books.
